Rwanda’s ICT Sector Marks 31st Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi
Kigali, 23 May 2025 — Leaders, staff, and stakeholders from Rwanda’s ICT sector gathered at the Kigali Genocide Memorial to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The commemoration event served as a moment of deep reflection, remembrance, and a reaffirmation of the collective responsibility to build a peaceful and unified nation.
The commemoration started with a tribute to former employees of Iposita who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and they laid wreaths of flowers at the remembrance monument located at the Iposita headquarters, and lit the flame of hope in their honour.
Over 500 participants representing MINICT, RISA, RSA, NIDA, RURA, RDB, NCSA, RICTA and other private sector stakeholders attended the event.
The commemoration continued at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where participants laid wreaths and engaged in reflection sessions centred on unity, peace, and the role of technology in fighting genocide ideology and advancing sustainable development.
In her keynote address, Minister of ICT and innovation Paula Ingabire highlighted the significance of inclusive governance in safeguarding Rwanda’s post-genocide progress: “Today is not only about remembering. It is a moment of self-reflection. What do we stand for? What legacy are we building in our daily work? What kind of leadership are we modelling? This is how we protect Rwanda from regressing—by choosing unity over ego, truth over convenience, and service over self.” She highlighted.
Munyantwari Alphonse, the Country Director of Aegis Trust, delivered a compelling presentation examining the governance systems that enabled the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to happen. He highlighted how past political regimes institutionalised ethnic discrimination rooted in colonial policies.
He also spoke on the crucial role of ICT in combating genocide ideology, emphasising how digital tools can be used to preserve memory, promote truth, and counter hate speech. He called on stakeholders in the ICT sector to continue leveraging technology to educate, inform, and protect future generations from divisionism and denial.
This year’s commemoration reinforced the ICT sector’s shared commitment to remembrance, reconciliation, and building a peaceful, inclusive Rwanda that honours the memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
