Rwandan Digital Ambassadors enhance their skills through study tour in the Republic of Korea

Two cohorts of 28 Rwandan Digital Ambassador supervisors and 9 mentors participated in a 24-day study tour programme titled “Strengthening Digital Literacy through Supporting the Digital Ambassador Programme in Rwanda” in the Republic of Korea. The first cohort, comprising 17 participants, attended the training from September 23 to October 4, 2024, while the second cohort of 20 participants was trained from November 4 to November 15, 2024, with each group participating for 12 days.

The programme was designed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills to advance Rwanda’s digital literacy level. Organised by KOICA, the study tour aimed to emphasise the importance of strengthening digital literacy capabilities and contribute to the successful implementation of initiatives that improve the quality of life for Rwandans. The main objectives of the programme were to understand the Digital Ambassador Programme (DAP), recognise the importance of strengthening digital literacy capabilities, enable the stable and efficient management of the Digital Ambassador Programme (DAP), and enhance future cooperation in DAP between Korea and Rwanda.

In addition, the study tour was designed to provide trainees with insights into Korea's successful digital transformation strategies, enabling them to apply these lessons to improve their daily activities and contribute to Rwanda's development. Participants engaged in the following key courses and activities:

  • Information Security and Trends of the 4th Industrial Revolution: which explored current trends in information security and their implications in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution;

  • Understanding Approach to Digital Transformation: which examined the principles and methodologies for achieving successful digital transformation;

  • Strengthening Digital Literacy Capabilities through the use of the Metaverse: this introduced the potential of the Metaverse as a tool for enhancing digital literacy and fostering innovation;

  • Case Studies: Competencies & Activities of a Digital Ambassador and understanding of digital literacy which analysed real-world examples showcasing the roles and impact of Digital Ambassadors in promoting digital skills and focused on successful digital literacy initiatives and their practical applications;

  • Understanding Korean Culture and Language: This session provided insights into Korean culture and language, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding;

Apart from their core training sessions, both cohorts had the opportunity to visit various prominent locations in the Republic of Korea. These visits were designed to enrich their understanding of digital innovation, culture, and industry collaboration, providing a well-rounded experience. They visited the following areas: 

  • Digital Competency Center by the National Information Society Agency (NIA): The cohorts visited the Digital Competency Center, a government initiative promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and operated by NIA. This project is dedicated to enabling individuals to adapt to the digital world easily and enjoy the benefits of digital technology. The centre primarily focuses on providing collective digital education to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and multicultural families. Training sessions are held at welfare centres, district offices, and community centres, making digital inclusion accessible to everyone.

  • Bucheon University: Bucheon University, a leading institution for vocational training and industry-academia collaboration, was another key stop for the cohorts. Known for its excellence, the university has ranked first in the Korean Service Quality Index for nine consecutive years in the specialised college category. This visit provided insights into the integration of academic training with industry requirements, inspiring Rwanda’s digital transformation efforts.

  • Hyundai Motor Studio in Goyang: The cohorts explored Hyundai Motor Studio, Korea’s largest automobile theme park. Visitors learned about the car manufacturing process and the functioning of automobiles. A highlight of the studio is the Car Rotator, which showcases Hyundai’s latest cars in a 180-degree rotation, allowing audiences to view the vehicles from different perspectives.

  • Cultural and Historical Visits: To provide a deeper appreciation of Korean culture and history, the cohorts visited 

    • Gyeongbokgung Palace: A stunning example of traditional Korean architecture and a vital part of the country’s history.

    • Coex Aquarium & Starfield Library: The Coex Aquarium offered a glimpse into marine biodiversity, while the Starfield Library showcased the beauty of innovative public spaces.

These visits not only enhanced the cohorts’ learning experience but also exposed them to Korea's advancements in technology, education, and cultural heritage, reinforcing their understanding of global digital transformation efforts
