Rwanda Launches the Center for Digital Public Infrastructure: A New Era of Innovation and Inclusion

During the Inclusive Fintech Forum held from February 24 to 26, 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda officially launched the Center for Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), a pioneering hub dedicated to accelerating the design, deployment, and scaling of inclusive, open, and interoperable digital systems. This landmark initiative aims to shape the future of DPI not only in Rwanda but across Africa and beyond, reinforcing the country’s commitment to digital transformation, financial inclusion, and innovation.

Speaking at the launch event, the CEO of Rwanda Information Society Authority, Innocent Bagamba Muhizi, highlighted the importance of this initiative, affirming, "Digital infrastructure is the backbone of digital economies; it unlocks opportunities for financial inclusion, enables seamless digital identity systems, and powers secure and efficient payment infrastructures. With this Center, we aim to create scalable and people-centric solutions that will benefit Rwanda, Africa, and the global community."

The Center for DPI will support governments and private sector players in deploying secure and scalable digital infrastructures while fostering collaboration, research, and knowledge exchange. It will also serve as a dynamic testbed for emerging DPI solutions, allowing innovators to pilot and refine technologies before large-scale implementation.

Rwanda has long embraced digital transformation as a key driver of socio-economic progress, and this Center is a testament to that commitment. "We are not just building for Rwanda; we are building for Africa and the world. We invite governments, fintech innovators, development partners, and technology leaders to collaborate with us in shaping the future of digital public infrastructure," said Innocent Bagamba Muhizi.

The Center’s launch was made possible through strategic partnerships with the Gates Foundation, Codevelop, Access to Finance Rwanda - AFR, and continued collaboration with the National Bank of Rwanda. As the journey of digital innovation continues, Rwanda welcomes partners to join in strengthening ecosystems that empower communities and drive inclusive digital transformation.
