Rwanda launches eKash, advancing Rwanda’s cashless economy vision
Rwanda has taken a major step forward in its digital transformation journey with the official launch of eKash, the country’s National Digital Payment System, marking a new era of seamless, secure, and interoperable digital payments for all citizens.
The launch of eKash reinforces Rwanda’s commitment to building inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) that enables every Rwandan regardless of location or income level—to participate in the digital economy. Designed as a national digital public good, eKash allows users to send and receive money across different banks and mobile money platforms, reducing fragmentation in the payments ecosystem and improving efficiency, affordability, and accessibility.
eKash is the result of strong collaboration between public and private sector partners, led by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR), Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA), Rwanda Switch (RSwitch), and Access to Finance Rwanda (AFR), with technical and strategic support from AfricaNenda, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the global Mojaloop community. This partnership-driven approach reflects Rwanda’s model of leveraging shared infrastructure to accelerate national development outcomes.
By enabling real-time, interoperable digital payments, eKash is expected to support financial inclusion, enhance government service delivery, stimulate innovation, and strengthen trust in digital transactions. The system aligns with Rwanda’s broader digital economy agenda, including the goal of reducing reliance on cash while ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s digital progress.
The launch of eKash demonstrates Rwanda’s leadership in deploying scalable, inclusive, and people-centered digital solutions setting a strong foundation for a cashless, connected, and resilient economy.
