Digital Ambassadors honour 1994 Genocide victims and support survivor families
Kigali, 20 June 2025- About 85 Digital Ambassadors from the City of Kigali, representing the Districts of Gasabo, Nyarugenge, and Kicukiro, visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial on Friday to pay tribute to the more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi who are buried at the memorial. The visit was organized as part of ongoing efforts to learn Rwanda’s history, instill the values of unity, compassion, and national memory among young digital leaders, and it provided an emotional & educational experience for the participants and helped them to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.
The Digital Ambassadors toured the memorial’s exhibits, reflected on the traumatic history caused by bad governance and learned about the history of the genocide, and the stories of the victims and survivors. The visit was not only a moment to remember the lives lost but also a chance to better understand Rwanda’s past. After the tour, they laid wreaths of flowers on the mass graves and observed a moment of silence to honour the victims and reflect on the country’s painful past.
Speaking at the event, a representative of the Digital Ambassadors shared a powerful quote from His Excellency President Paul Kagame, saying:
“We must face the cruel present knowing fully well that it is deeply connected to our dark past. They cannot be separated. So, for us, there is a choice to make: Either we are crushed between the two and cease to exist, or we stand up and fight.”
He encouraged his fellow ambassadors to use their digital skills to stand up and speak out against anyone who tries to divide the country or bring back dark times. He reminded them that they are the future leaders of Rwanda, and they must protect its peace and unity.
In addition to the commemoration, the Digital Ambassadors supported three families of genocide survivors with food and hygiene items, showing solidarity with those who were directly affected by the Genocide against the Tutsi.
A representative from the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA) headquarters called on them to take inspiration from the courage and patriotism of the then Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) who stopped the Genocide against the Tutsi and continues to protect the nation’s sovereignty to this day.
She also encouraged the ambassadors to embrace and preserve Rwandan unity, saying it is one of the most important choices that has helped the country reach the progress it enjoys today. “Unity is not just a value from our past, it is a choice we made, and one that continues to shape our future. As young leaders, you must protect it.” She highlighted.
She commended their initiative, saying that it helps young people not only understand Rwanda’s history but also contribute meaningfully to the community and that it gives hope for a better future whenever the youth is involved. The event closed with an appreciation message to all participants and a renewed commitment to help shape a peaceful and united nation.
